Everything You Need to Know About Sulfur Recovery

Sulfur is a chemical found in crude oil and natural gas. During the refining process for these products, sulfur must be removed. Sulfur removal reduces air pollution that would occur during engine combustion. In this YouTube video, viewers learn about the training requirements for sulfur recovery workers.

According to Matrix PDM, sulfur removal is mandated by the Federal Clean Air Act and the Environmental Protection Agency.

Workers who want to be part of this process must attend a training program. The program will provide the practical information needed to do this job.

In addition to removing the sulfur for fuel safety reasons, the sulfur can be exported to industries that use sulfur. Some of the products that use sulfur include auto batteries and fertilizer. Sulfur is also used for vulcanizing rubber, bleaching paper, and refining oil. The world’s sulfur supply is relatively low, so sulfur produced by the recovery method is a valuable asset.

Although there is more than one method of sulfur recovery, one of the best-known methods is called the Claus Process. This method uses two significant steps; first burning off sulfur from hydrogen sulfide. The second burning phase brings the rest of the sulfur to the surface, so it can be removed. To facilitate the recovery process, sulfur recovery catalysts (typically alumina or bauxite) are used.
